簡單來說，在設備跟設備溝通時，透過一個標準共通的通訊協定，讓彼此之間不同的儀器能互相交換訊息，而這協定之比對就有賴於根據DICOM所制定的標準化語言囉！如下圖所示。

Information object definition (IOD):
A data abstraction of a class of similar Real-World Objects which defines the nature and Attributes relevant to the class of Real-World Objects represented.

每個醫療設備項目在DICOM制定的環境下，都會擁有一份需記載身分資料等的規範，以便在資訊交換時符合相互傳輸之所需。在IOD這部分還跟其他數個part有關，例如：
PS 3.4, Service Class Specifications, PS 3.5, Data Structure and Semantics, PS 3.6, Data Dictionary, PS 3.7, Message Exchange Protocol,而根據相互之間的關係，產生可以符合DICOM標準通訊的意義。
